Founded in 2013, Parallel Vienna operates on a different logic than the commercial art fair circuit. Rather than renting booth space in a convention center, the fair transforms unconventional, vacant spaces—apartments, hotel rooms, galleries, artist studios—across the city into temporary exhibition venues. It's a deliberate rejection of the white cube, and it works.

The Format

The fair is structured around six curated segments: Artist Statements (emerging solo presentations), Interventions (site-specific works responding to the space itself), Gallery Statements, Project Statements (art associations and independent spaces), Coop Statements (collaborative formats), and Institutions (public collections and academies). This framework keeps the fair hybrid and experimental — not a marketplace dressed up as culture, but actual curatorial thinking.

The 14th edition in 2026 will feature established and emerging artists from around the world, with an emphasis on multimedia work: painting, sculpture, digital art, video, sound, and live performance. The fair runs day and night — exhibitions by day, music and performance after hours.

Why It Matters

Parallel Vienna has become a proving ground for artists who don't fit the gallery system. Prices start low enough that a serious collector can actually acquire work without gatekeeping. You'll find yourself in a conversation with the artist, not a gallery assistant trained to defer. The work bears the traces of how it was made and why — there's no house style, no curation toward a demographic. It's messy and specific and alive in a way that most commercial fairs have stopped being.
