The Third Man at Burg Kino

Carol Reed's 1949 masterpiece has been screening at Burg Kino every single week since 1949 — the longest continuously running film in any cinema in the world. Not a revival. Not a special occasion. A permanent fixture. The film is Vienna: postwar rubble, sewers, shadows, a city divided into four occupation zones. Orson Welles as Harry Lime. Joseph Cotten as the American writer who arrives to find his friend dead. Anton Karas on the zither. The Ferris wheel in the Prater. The final shot — a long straight road through autumn trees. Watching it here, in the city where it was filmed, in a cinema a short walk from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, is not something you can replicate anywhere else. The print is the original English version. Sundays at Burg Kino; Tuesdays with German subtitles. €10.50 per ticket.

Spring Wind: The Awakening at Urania / Stadtkino

A year-long documentary following Péter Magyar's challenge to Viktor Orbán. Shot in intimate moments and public rallies, it captures a country deciding who it wants to be. The film was released free online in Hungary ahead of the election and watched 3.3 million times; Magyar's Tisza party won 137 of 199 parliamentary seats. For Vienna's international community, it's a rare chance to see Hungary's political upheaval from the inside, in Hungarian with English subtitles. Screening at Urania tonight (July 14), then continuing at Stadtkino from July 23 through August 19.

frame[o]ut Open Air Cinema 2026 — MuseumsQuartier

Where: 7th · Neubau

Vienna's best free cinema returns to the MuseumsQuartier on July 10, running every Friday and Saturday at Hof 8 until August 29. This year's theme is 'Confrontation' — and frame[o]ut has been doing this long enough that the theme is a genuine curatorial frame, not a marketing label. The MQ courtyard, surrounded by the Kunsthalle and MUMOK, fills up with people who came for the film and stayed for the evening. Films are shown in original version with subtitles. If it rains, screenings move to MQ Arena21. Free entry, no reservation needed — just show up. The specific July program was not yet published at time of writing; check frameout.at for the weekly lineup. This is one of the most reliably good evenings Vienna offers in summer, and it costs nothing.

Kino am Dach 2026 — Mind Games season

Kino am Dach is back for its 23rd season on the roof of the Hauptbücherei — the main library on Urban-Loritz-Platz, accessible by lift straight from the U6 platform. This year's theme is MIND GAMES: the fragile construction of truth, conspiracy and illusion, reality and its manipulation. The July lineup mixes classics — Pi, Black Swan, Total Recall, Funny Games, Se7en — with new releases like Sentimental Value, Father Mother Sister Brother, and The Housemaid. Films start at 21:00, ticket pickup from 20:00. The rooftop setting is genuinely special: open sky, city views, the library's modernist geometry below you. It's the kind of place where you notice the air is different. The city feels smaller from up there. Tickets are €12 (€11 concessions). Bring a blanket — evenings get cool, and you'll want to stay longer than you planned.
