The Markterei Stadtheuriger is not a bar. It is not a restaurant. It is the Heuriger tradition — the Austrian wine tavern where you drink directly from the producer — relocated into a converted market hall in the 9th district and made weather-proof. Every Thursday and Friday from 16:00 to 22:00 through the end of July, a different winemaker sets up in the courtyard with their bottles, a rotating Streetfood vendor brings the food, and the neighbourhood fills the space at the end of the working day.

Why the Heuriger Works in the City

The traditional Heuriger lives in the wine villages on Vienna's edges — Grinzing, Nussdorf, Stammersdorf. You go there to sit under vines, eat schnitzel, drink wine that the producer made themselves. The ritual is the point: you're not in a restaurant, you're in someone's vineyard. The waiter won't smile. The schnitzel is enormous. The wine is honest.

The Stadtheuriger takes that ritual and plants it in the city. The Markterei's courtyard becomes the vineyard. The covered market hall becomes the shelter. The producer is still in the room — still pouring their own wine, still explaining what they've made. The neighbourhood becomes the crowd instead of tourists from the 1st.

The Space

The Markterei occupies a real former market building on Severingasse, not a converted warehouse or a pop-up venue. The bones of the original structure are visible — the scale, the light, the way the space breathes. The courtyard is covered but open, which means rain doesn't close it, wind doesn't kill it, and summer heat doesn't trap you.

Each week the setup is the same: tables in the courtyard, the winemaker's station, the food vendor. The rhythm is Heuriger rhythm — slow, indifferent to urgency, exactly what you want on a Thursday or Friday evening when you've just left the office and have no plans beyond staying longer than you meant to.

The Producers and the Food

The winemakers rotate weekly. Recent lineups have included Weingut Joiseph and Weinrudi. Each brings their own selection — you're tasting what they actually make, not a curated list. The food changes with the producer, so there's a reason to come back.

Free entry. Wine by the glass. The whole evening costs what you drink and eat, nothing more.

Why July

July is peak season for the format. The weather is reliable. The light stays late. The city is full of people who've lived here long enough to know the difference between a tourist trap and something worth their time. The Stadtheuriger fills that gap — it's not a destination, it's a reason to change your Thursday evening.
