The Bellaria Kino closed four years ago. It was beloved, but it was closed. In 2022, someone decided to try something unusual: ask the city for €100,000, and ask the public for €135,000. The public said yes. 135,000 people decided this cinema was worth saving.
It reopened this spring.
The Bar
The bar is Bella Bella, run by Moritz Baier and Daniel Botros. They also run Votiv-Kino and Café Liebling. They know how to make a room feel like you want to stay in it longer than you planned.
Bella Bella sits in what was once the waiting room. Low mirrored ceiling, warm light, good wines. The drinks are named after the cinema: Bicicletta with Grüner Veltliner, Bellaria Sprizz with Prosecco and Piedmont cherry liqueur. You can order a wine by the glass without explanation or performance.
Why It Matters
The Bellaria is not a new opening. It is a reopening. That distinction matters. The city has lost cinemas before. This time, enough people said no — not in a protest way, in a funding way. They put money where their preference was. The Bellaria exists now because of that choice.
The bar exists because of it too. Bella Bella is the reason you might go to the cinema and stay for a drink after, or go for the drink and catch the film before. It's the kind of place that makes a neighbourhood feel like it still has a reason to gather.

The Karmeliterviertel's open-air farmers' market runs Fridays and Saturdays year-round on Karmeliterplatz in the 2nd district. Once quiet, the neighbourhood has transformed around it—galleries, studios, and restaurants now fill the streets, but the market itself remains anchored in the practical: locals buying vegetables, not tourists buying vegetables for photos. The dining scene has grown without losing the neighbourhood feel. Come early if you want a seat at one of the surrounding cafés; stay for lunch if you find yourself lingering. Vienna's oldest Baroque park, opened to the public in 1775 by Joseph II. Tree-lined avenues and meadows stay open year-round.
