Buchhandlung List is not a tourist bookshop. It's a neighbourhood space built on a simple proposition: a good bookstore is known not by how many books it has, but by which ones it recommends.

The shop is divided by language — French, Italian, German, English, Spanish — each section run by a native speaker with genuine literary knowledge. The French section alone holds roughly 3,000 titles. The Italian section, about 1,800. The German and English combined exceed 7,000. But numbers don't capture what matters: these are curated selections, not inventory dumps. The staff read. They argue about books. They know what they're talking about.

Why It's Different

Walk in and you can order any title available in France or Italy — they'll confirm availability within 24 hours and ship it free from €50. This matters for readers outside the German-language mainstream. The shop also runs a monthly book subscription service, curated by hand, and hosts regular readings and book club meetings in the space itself.

The neighbourhood is Alsergrund, the 9th — a grätzel with real bookish texture, where people still walk to independent shops instead of defaulting to delivery. The shop is rooted there.

Fenster Café

Fenster Café

A window-serve specialty coffee bar in a centuries-old building near Schwedenplatz, in the heart of the Innere Stadt. The signature drink is the Fensterccino — cappuccino served in a handmade waffle cone dipped in Belgian chocolate. The cone is engineered to hold the coffee without dissolving, and as you drink, the chocolate inside slowly melts. By the time you finish the coffee, you have a soft chocolate treat at the tip to finish. Started in 2011, the café now fills over 130,000 orders annually and has been voted among Europe's 50 best coffee shops. It's takeaway only — no seating, no lingering. The surrounding streets (Griechengasse, Fleischmarkt) are lined with 17th-century facades and baroque churches. Quick, specific, and worth the €9.50.

20. Wiener Kunstsupermarkt

Where
6th · Mariahilf

Twenty years in, the Kunstsupermarkt remains deliberately simple: art without museum doors or gallery gatekeeping. This season brings 5,000+ original works by 90 artists from 14 countries into a passage off Mariahilfer Straße in the 6th. You browse, compare, buy, take it home. The work ranges from drawings and watercolours to oil, acrylic, photography, and small sculpture — abstract and figurative, landscapes, still life, figure studies. Prices are fixed; there's no velvet rope energy. The opening vernissage was October 14; regular hours run Monday–Friday 11–19, Saturday 10–18. The exhibition runs through March 2027.
