The Place

Mayer am Pfarrplatz sits in the 19th district, in a building where Beethoven spent the summer of 1817 composing parts of his Ninth Symphony. The Heuriger itself occupies a large garden courtyard, shaded by old vines and trees, with the Nussdorf church tower visible above the roofline. It's the kind of setting that makes sense of why Viennese culture invented the idea of sitting outside with wine and bread and cheese until the light goes.

The village of Nussdorf itself is quieter than Grinzing — reachable by Tram D to its final stop, about 25 minutes from the city centre. The wine street (Nussdorfer Strasse) has several Heurigen clustered together, but Mayer is the anchor. More locals than tour groups, more working vineyard than performance space.

The Wine

Mayer produces its own wine from vineyards in the Nussdorf area. The Grüner Veltliner is the signature — fresh, peppery, with good weight. The Riesling is also excellent. You order by the glass (Achtel = 125ml, Viertel = 250ml) or by the litre, and the price is reasonable: €5–8 per glass. The wine list is straightforward — no pretension, no sommelier theatre.

The cold buffet is traditional Heuriger fare: bread, cheese, cold meats, sometimes a warm dish. Nothing elaborate, everything honest. The total cost for an afternoon — a few glasses of wine and some food — is €20–30 per person.

When to Go

Mayer operates year-round in its restaurant section, but the garden Buschenschank (seasonal wine tavern) is most alive in spring and autumn. September is peak season — the new wine (Sturm) arrives, the harvest is happening in the vineyards, and the light is golden. But a summer evening at dusk is also perfect. Arrive around 4–5pm for the best light and a relaxed atmosphere before the after-work crowd arrives.

Check ahead before you visit — call the Heuriger to confirm opening. The number is on their website, and staff speak basic English.

Café Otto & Camillo — Otto-Wagner-Areal pop-up, the 14th

When
1 June 2026 – 30 September 2026
Where
14th · Penzing

The Otto-Wagner-Areal on Baumgartner Höhe is one of Vienna's most extraordinary architectural ensembles — a 1907 psychiatric hospital complex designed by Otto Wagner, now slowly repurposed for cultural use. This summer, Café Otto & Camillo has opened in Pavillon C as the grounds' anchor venue, serving coffee, cake, snacks, and drinks. The café's name honours both Otto Wagner (the architect) and Camillo Sitte (the urban planner whose ideas shaped Vienna's public spaces) — a specifically Viennese register. The setting matters as much as the coffee: Jugendstil pavilions, a hospital park, the city's architectural DNA visible in every detail. It's a trip worth making to the 14th district, especially early on a weekday morning when the grounds are quieter.

Offline Oida — Digital Detox Pop-up Café, Wien

Offline Oida — Digital Detox Pop-up Café, Wien

When
1 June 2026 – 30 September 2026

Offline Oida is Vienna's first digital detox pop-up café, open Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00–18:00 in Lokal im Hof in the 4th district. The concept is straightforward: leave your phone, laptop, and tablet at the door. Inside, there's coffee, tea, homemade cake, books and games to borrow, and a garden. Dogs are welcome. It sounds like a gimmick — Vienna's Instagram-saturated café culture does need a counter-proposal — but it's a genuine experiment in what a café can be when everyone's pocket is empty of screens. The waiter won't ask if you want to sit inside or out. You'll just sit, and the afternoon will move differently. The price is café-standard. The address is Weyringergasse 36 in the 4th district, in the courtyard of the Alpenmilchzentrale. Hours are Saturday and Sunday 10:00–18:00. It's a pop-up, so details shift — check @offlineoida on Instagram for current information. But the idea is solid: a space where the default is conversation, reading, or doing nothing at all. In a city full of people staring at their phones on Schanigarten terraces, this is the deliberate alternative.
