The Kunstsupermarkt has been running for twenty years. It started as a response to the Vienna gallery system: a place where artists could show directly to buyers without the velvet rope, and where people could walk in without feeling like they were trespassing. It worked. Now it's one of the city's most reliable art events — the kind of thing that happens twice a year and people actually show up for.

The scale is generous. Ninety artists from across Europe and beyond, working in everything from oil and acrylic to photography, drawing, and small sculpture. The work ranges from €50 to several thousand — but most pieces sit in the €200–€1000 range. This is the point of the fair: not a vanity project, not a speculative market, just artists selling work at prices that make sense.

What You'll See

The fair rotates through different media and styles. One section is figurative work — portraits, nudes, still life. Another is abstract. Photography gets its own area. There's always landscape painting, always drawing, always something unexpected tucked into a corner. The curators don't impose a theme; they just make sure the work is original and the prices are honest.

The vernissage on October 14 at 7 pm is the right time to go if you want to talk to artists. They're there, they're willing to discuss the work, and there's usually cheap Sekt in plastic cups — the Viennese way. After that, it's a steady flow of people browsing, buying, and occasionally having genuine conversations about art in a space that doesn't demand you perform enthusiasm.

Why the 6th District

Mariahilfer Straße is the commercial spine of the 6th — a neighbourhood that has its own rhythm, indifferent to trends. The fair fits that energy. It's not trying to be cool. It's not trying to be anything. It's just a large, well-lit space where artists show work and people buy it or don't. That's enough.

The fair runs through the end of February, with regular hours that don't require you to plan around opening times. Thursday and Friday evenings, Saturday mornings, weekday afternoons — it's designed for the way people actually move through the city.

In the margin

Most pieces sit in the €200–€1000 range — this is the point of the fair.

The Artists

The roster changes every edition, but the fair has developed a reputation for attracting serious artists who want to sell work, not perform for collectors. You'll see painters who have been showing for fifteen years alongside people at their first fair. The work is uneven — as it should be. That's what makes it real.

Fenster Café

Fenster Café

A window-serve specialty coffee bar in a centuries-old building near Schwedenplatz, in the heart of the Innere Stadt. The signature drink is the Fensterccino — cappuccino served in a handmade waffle cone dipped in Belgian chocolate. The cone is engineered to hold the coffee without dissolving, and as you drink, the chocolate inside slowly melts. By the time you finish the coffee, you have a soft chocolate treat at the tip to finish. Started in 2011, the café now fills over 130,000 orders annually and has been voted among Europe's 50 best coffee shops. It's takeaway only — no seating, no lingering. The surrounding streets (Griechengasse, Fleischmarkt) are lined with 17th-century facades and baroque churches. Quick, specific, and worth the €9.50.

Twenty years in, the Kunstsupermarkt remains deliberately simple: art without museum doors or gallery gatekeeping. This season brings 5,000+ original works by 90 artists from 14 countries into a passage off Mariahilfer Straße in the 6th. You browse, compare, buy, take it home. The work ranges from drawings and watercolours to oil, acrylic, photography, and small sculpture — abstract and figurative, landscapes, still life, figure studies. Prices are fixed; there's no velvet rope energy. The opening vernissage was October 14; regular hours run Monday–Friday 11–19, Saturday 10–18. The exhibition runs through March 2027.
