Markterei converted a former hydraulic engineering laboratory into a working market hall. The bones of that industrial past are still visible — concrete, high ceilings, the kind of space that could feel cold but doesn't, because the room is full of people tasting cheese, drinking wine, talking to the people who made it.
The producers rotate, but the focus stays fixed on regional Austrian food. You'll find cheese makers, bakers, picklers, wine producers, and whatever else the season and the producers' schedules bring. The model is simple: you walk the stalls, sample what interests you, buy what you want. Then you sit at the long communal table in the middle of the room — the kind of table where you're eating next to strangers and by the end you're not.
The Garden
When the weather is good, there's a garden outside. It's not large, but it's a genuine escape from the street. People sit there with wine and food from the stalls, and the pace slows down.
Special Events
Beyond the regular Friday and Saturday market, Markterei runs seasonal events — an Easter market, a seedling market in spring, and during June and July, a Stadtheuriger (city heuriger) where wineries from various regions present their wines for tasting and direct purchase. During the Stadtheuriger run, the Saturday market closes.
In the margin
The space sees itself as dynamic, a place where people come together to share ideas.
It's not a performance. The producers are there because they have something to sell, and the people who come are there because they want to eat well. That directness is what makes it work.

10. Genussfest — Sussitz
- When
- 10 October 2026
- Where
- 2nd · Leopoldstadt
Sussitz marks a decade at the Karmelitermarkt with a producer-focused celebration: 20+ winemakers and food artisans from across Austria pour their own bottles and tell their stories. Guest of honor is Vittorio Gianni Capovilla, one of Italy's most respected distillers—a figure revered in the field for revolutionizing fruit distillation through water-bath methods that preserve delicate aromas. This is the kind of event where you actually talk to the people making the wine, no velvet rope, no gatekeeping. The afternoon runs 15–21h on October 10 in the 2nd district.

- 14th · Penzing
A multimedia exhibition on queer forms of remembrance, death, and transience at Queer Museum Vienna. The show explores how traditional mourning rituals often fail to reflect queer lived realities — how death can mean erasure or reinterpretation, how queer people are separated from chosen families and social contexts. Artists present mourning as collective experience and envision queer alternatives to funerals and burial sites. The work spans installation, video, performance, and film, with pieces on lesbian vampires, drag queens as undertakers, and the remembrance of destroyed autonomous spaces. Curated by barbara stöhr. Thu–Sun 2–6pm. Free entry.
