The Space
The Sophienspital occupied this site from the late 19th century until recently. It was a working hospital for over a hundred years, embedded in the fabric of the 7th district in a way that matters. When it closed, the complex could have become apartments or offices. Instead, Roman Bolschetz and chef Stephan Zuber saw what was already there: architecture with presence, high ceilings, walls that have absorbed time.
The Kenyonpavillon — one of the original pavilions — is now the restaurant and bar. The design doesn't perform heritage. It doesn't strip the walls and start over. The space works because the history is left alone.
What to Eat
Stephan Zuber's kitchen works with regional Austrian produce and a sharing-plate concept. This isn't minimalist fine dining or casual comfort food — it's somewhere in between, the kind of cooking that takes technique seriously but doesn't announce it. The menu changes with seasons and what's available.
The bar opens from afternoon onward. Signature cocktails, but the real point is the space and the pace. Different light at different times of day. You can come for an early drink or stay through dinner.
The Courtyard
The Sophienpark — the courtyard within the complex — opens to the public on June 12. It's a rare thing in Vienna: a genuinely quiet outdoor space in the middle of the city, with actual trees and room to breathe. The park is free to enter.

Sussitz marks a decade at the Karmelitermarkt with a producer-focused celebration: 20+ winemakers and food artisans from across Austria pour their own bottles and tell their stories. Guest of honor is Vittorio Gianni Capovilla, one of Italy's most respected distillers—a figure revered in the field for revolutionizing fruit distillation through water-bath methods that preserve delicate aromas. This is the kind of event where you actually talk to the people making the wine, no velvet rope, no gatekeeping. The afternoon runs 15–21h on October 10 in the 2nd district.

Ivana Lazić works with earth itself — soil, weight, saturation, the materials pulled from beneath the surface. Her sculptures and installations occupy Kulturdrogerie's basement space in the 18th, where the architecture itself becomes part of the work. The gallery opens Thursday, October 1 at 6pm. A multimedia exhibition on queer forms of remembrance, death, and transience at Queer Museum Vienna. The show explores how traditional mourning rituals often fail to reflect queer lived realities — how death can mean erasure or reinterpretation, how queer people are separated from chosen families and social contexts. Artists present mourning as collective experience and envision queer alternatives to funerals and burial sites. The work spans installation, video, performance, and film, with pieces on lesbian vampires, drag queens as undertakers, and the remembrance of destroyed autonomous spaces. Curated by barbara stöhr. Thu–Sun 2–6pm. Free entry.
