Fritz Wieninger is not a fashionable winemaker. He is a serious one. In the 1990s, when biodynamic viticulture was still considered eccentric in Austria, he committed to it entirely — working the soil, respecting the rhythms of the calendar, producing wines that taste like they have something to say. The wines are now sought after across Europe, but the tavern on Nussberg has remained exactly what it was: a place to drink them.
The Setting
The Meeresterrasse — the "sea terrace" — sits at the edge of the Nussberg vineyard, overlooking Vienna. On a clear evening, you can see the Danube curve to the east, the city's spires and rooflines tier down below you, and the sky turn orange behind it all. The vines are still working around you. It is not a designed experience. It is a place where a vineyard happens to have space for people.
In warmer months, locals occupy lounge chairs scattered among the rows. There is no reservation system, no table service in the traditional sense — you order at a small counter and carry your glass back to your seat. The waiter will not smile at you. This is not a deficiency.
The Wine and Food
Wieninger's Gemischter Satz — Vienna's traditional field blend of white varieties — is the obvious order. It is light, mineral, alive. The Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are equally good, and if you ask, there is usually a red worth trying. Prices are fair. The wines are served cool, which matters.
The food is Buschenschank: cold plates of Liptauer (a spiced cheese spread), cured meats, cheese, bread. Everything comes from producers Wieninger has worked with for years. It is not elaborate. It is exactly what you need alongside wine in the evening air.

Sussitz marks a decade at the Karmelitermarkt with a producer-focused celebration: 20+ winemakers and food artisans from across Austria pour their own bottles and tell their stories. Guest of honor is Vittorio Gianni Capovilla, one of Italy's most respected distillers—a figure revered in the field for revolutionizing fruit distillation through water-bath methods that preserve delicate aromas. This is the kind of event where you actually talk to the people making the wine, no velvet rope, no gatekeeping. The afternoon runs 15–21h on October 10 in the 2nd district.

The Karmeliterviertel's open-air farmers' market runs Fridays and Saturdays year-round on Karmeliterplatz in the 2nd district. Once quiet, the neighbourhood has transformed around it—galleries, studios, and restaurants now fill the streets, but the market itself remains anchored in the practical: locals buying vegetables, not tourists buying vegetables for photos. The dining scene has grown without losing the neighbourhood feel. Come early if you want a seat at one of the surrounding cafés; stay for lunch if you find yourself lingering. Free entry; vendor prices vary.

Vienna's oldest Baroque park, opened to the public in 1775 by Joseph II. Tree-lined avenues and meadows stay open year-round. In autumn, light filters through the chestnuts at an angle that makes everything look like a film still. The north side has a bakery that opens at seven — early morning before the joggers and kids arrive is the time to go.
