Public Moves has been ImPulsTanz's most democratic gesture since 2016: free, all-levels-welcome dance classes scattered across Vienna's parks and public spaces throughout the festival season. No registration. No gatekeeping. Just teaching artists and whoever shows up.

This 10th anniversary edition is different. Instead of a neighbourhood park, it's happening in the Arkadenhof of Vienna City Hall — the arcaded courtyard on Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz, one of the city's most formally beautiful outdoor spaces. The contrast is deliberate. Public Moves has always insisted that dance belongs everywhere. This time, it's claiming the centre.

What to Expect

The event runs from 17:00 on August 8. Teaching artists lead free classes back-to-back, each spinning their own playlist. The format is simple: you arrive, you join a class, you move. No experience necessary. The courtyard holds maybe 200 people comfortably — it fills quickly, but the space absorbs the crowd without feeling cramped.

The architecture works in your favour. The arcades frame the courtyard without closing it in. The light at 17:00 in August comes from the side, turning the whole space into something between a stage and a room. You're dancing in public but not exposed.

Why This Matters

ImPulsTanz has always positioned itself against the idea that contemporary dance is a seated, ticketed, curated experience. Public Moves is the proof: dance is a verb, not a spectacle. The teaching artists are there because they believe it. The festival is there because it believes it.
