Miao Ying works at the intersection of internet culture, artificial intelligence, and artistic practice. Her exhibition Come, Sit, Stay arrives at a moment when generative AI has moved from conceptual provocation to everyday tool — when the question is no longer whether machines can make art, but what it means for humans to make art alongside them.

The show is not a polemic. It's an investigation. What survives when the tool becomes indistinguishable from the maker? When you can't tell whether a line was drawn by a hand or generated by a model, does the distinction still matter? The work explores these questions without settling them.

The Title

Come, Sit, Stay — the commands you give a dog. It's a title doing a lot of work. There's obedience in it, and training, and the relationship between instruction and execution. There's also something gentler: the rituals of care, the small acts of attention that bind one being to another. The title holds both readings at once.

Why Belvedere 21

Belvedere 21, in Vienna's 3rd district, has become one of the city's most consistently interesting venues for international contemporary art since its reopening. It's the kind of space that takes risks on work that doesn't fit neatly into existing categories. This is Miao Ying's first major Austrian solo — a significant moment for an artist whose practice sits at the edges of where contemporary art is asking itself hard questions right now.

The exhibition runs until October 4. Worth the walk.
