Waves Vienna started in 2011 as a platform for emerging music and has evolved into one of Europe's most thoughtful music festivals. It's not a mainstream lineup chase — it's a curation machine. The festival and its parallel conference operate on a simple principle: the best new music comes from independent artists and labels working outside the major-label ecosystem, and the best way to find it is through careful programming and direct encounter.
This year, the UK is the Guest of Honour. That means a concentrated block of British emerging acts — everything from experimental electronic to indie guitar bands to alternative R&B — sits alongside the international programme. It's a genuine curatorial spotlight, not a token gesture.
The Format
Waves spreads across 11 stages over three days, all located in the Gürtel venues: Chelsea, B72, and the other U-Bahn arch spaces that define the 8th district's underground music culture. These are the right rooms for this kind of festival — intimate, acoustically interesting, with their own history and character. You move between them on foot, discovering acts you didn't plan to see, staying longer than you expected.
The conference runs in parallel. This is not a side event — it's integral to the festival's mission. Panels and talks cover sync for film and games, artificial intelligence and copyright, new perspectives from Central and Eastern Europe, and a dedicated Young Professionals Programme for people new to the music industry.
Why It Matters
Waves operates on the belief that the music industry's future is built by independent artists and curators, not by algorithm or marketing spend. Every act on the bill was selected because someone at Waves heard something worth hearing. You won't find the same artists at every festival. The lineup changes each year because the music changes.
The Gürtel location is also deliberate. The 8th district has been Vienna's underground music centre for decades — the clubs, the labels, the studios are all here. Waves doesn't import the festival from elsewhere; it emerges from the neighbourhood it inhabits.

Vienna's annual museum marathon opens over 130 venues across the city for a single night, 6 PM to midnight on October 3. One €19 ticket covers most institutions — children under 12 enter free. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, National Library, and Leopold Museum offer English-language guided tours. Most museums add special programs: restoration demonstrations, workshops, performances, even VR experiences. Expect crowds (typically 150,000 people) but also an unusual atmosphere — the city's cultural weight becomes tangible when all these spaces stay open late and thousands move between them on foot. The ticket also works as a public transport pass from 5:30 PM to 12:30 AM the next morning.

Miao Ying is a Chinese artist working at the intersection of internet culture, artificial intelligence, and artistic authorship. Her exhibition Come, Sit, Stay opens at Belvedere 21 on July 10 and runs until October 4. The show doesn't argue against AI — it investigates what survives when the tool becomes indistinguishable from the maker. What does it mean to make art when machines can generate images, texts, and sounds on demand, and the gesture is no longer legible as human intent? The title — the commands you give a dog — carries the weight. Belvedere 21, in the 3rd, has become one of Vienna's most consistently interesting venues for international contemporary art since its reopening. This is Miao Ying's first major Austrian solo.

The Albertina marks 250 years in 2026 with an anniversary exhibition that reframes the collection's founding story. Archduchess Marie Christine, co-founder alongside Duke Albert of Saxony-Teschen, endowed the collection with both wealth and artistic direction — a role that history has largely credited to her husband alone. The exhibition *Sammeln für die Zukunft* (Collecting for the Future) runs June 19–October 11 and spans the museum's 1.2 million objects: from Dürer's Hare to Schiele's expressive drawings, tracing how a private collection became one of the world's most important graphic art institutions. The angle is not "visit the Albertina" but "the Albertina's anniversary show is an argument about who gets credit for founding one of the world's great drawing collections." Marie Christine's role as both patron and artist — she was active as a painter herself — shaped the collection's scope in ways that deserve to be named.
