Harry Lighton's debut feature premiered at Cannes 2025 and immediately earned the label "dom-com" — a romantic comedy about a BDSM relationship between a nerdy traffic warden (Harry Melling) and a brooding motorcycle rider (Alexander Skarsgård). Based on Adam Mars-Jones's 2020 novella Box Hill, the film is funny, tender, and genuinely candid about desire and power in ways that most British films are not. Lighton is a self-taught writer-director whose short films include the award-winning Wren Boys (2017); this is his first feature and it arrives fully formed. Sight & Sound called it "electrifying." Screening in OmdU at Kino de France on July 7 — one night only.

Hysteria is a sharp, anxiety-inducing thriller about a German film production recreating the 1993 Solingen arson attacks. When a Quran is accidentally burned on set, the incident spirals into conspiracy, accusation, and institutional hysteria. The film follows Elif, a second assistant director of Turkish background, as she navigates the fallout while the industry that claims to care about representation proves structurally indifferent to it. Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay's second feature (his debut Oray won the German Film Prize for Best Screenplay) premiered at Berlinale 2025 and uses the film-within-a-film format to expose the gap between progressive self-image and actual practice in German cultural institutions — a tension that resonates far beyond Germany. Jim Jarmusch won the Golden Lion at Venice 2025 with this anthology film — three stories, each about a different family relationship, each shot with the deadpan precision and deep human warmth that has defined his work for four decades. Tom Waits and Adam Driver share tea by a frozen lake. Vicky Krieps and Cate Blanchett play sisters navigating a lifetime of unspoken tension. The third story closes the triptych. This is Jarmusch at his most mature — a film about what families leave unsaid, made by a director who has always understood that silence carries more weight than speech. Daniel Roher — the Oscar-winning documentarian behind Navalny — makes his narrative feature debut with Tuner, a New York crime thriller about a gifted piano tuner (Leo Woodall) whose heightened sense of hearing draws him into safecracking. It's a genre film made with real craft: the sound design is extraordinary, silence used as a dramatic weapon in a film about a man who hears everything. The supporting cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Jean Reno, and Lior Raz. Screening in OmdU (original language with German subtitles) at both Votiv Kino and Kino de France throughout the week — multiple chances to catch it in the 9th and 1st districts. Votiv Kino, built in 1912 and repositioned as Vienna's flagship arthouse cinema in 1986, is one of the most atmospheric places in the city to see a film like this.
